Teachers’ Payday: A Glimpse at Possible Salary Increases in 2024

For Filipino teachers, the dawn of 2024 brings not only a new year but also a glimmer of hope for improved compensation. While a definitive answer on salary increases remains elusive, several ongoing developments hint at potential changes in the landscape of teacher remuneration. Here’s a closer look at the factors paving the way for a brighter financial future for educators:

1. Budgetary Commitment:

  • The 2024 National Expenditure Program (NEP) allocated P16.95 billion for salary increases of government employees, including teachers. This signifies the national government’s recognition of the need to address the long-standing issue of low teacher salaries.
  • Senator Ralph Recto championed House Bill 8081, advocating for a four-tranche salary hike for government employees, starting January 2024. While still in the legislative process, the bill underscores the ongoing push for salary improvements.

2. DepEd’s Advocacy:

  • The Department of Education (DepEd) has consistently expressed its commitment to improving teacher welfare, including their financial well-being. DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte-Carpio has publicly supported efforts for salary increases, acknowledging the vital role teachers play in nation-building.
  • Initiatives like the proposed “Teaching Supplies Allowance Act” (House Bill No. 9682) further demonstrate DepEd’s dedication to supplementing teacher income, though it doesn’t directly address base salary.

3. Public and Legislative Support:

  • The plight of Filipino teachers receives widespread public concern and vocal support from various groups. Teachers’ unions and education advocates continue to push for fair compensation, raising awareness and influencing policy decisions.
  • Legislative bodies like the House of Representatives and the Senate actively discuss bills pertaining to teacher welfare, demonstrating a collaborative effort towards meaningful change.

Uncertainties and Opportunities:

Despite the promising outlook, certain uncertainties remain. The exact amount of salary increase, if any, is yet to be confirmed. Additionally, the timeline for implementation and the distribution of increases across salary grades are points of discussion.

Yet, amidst these uncertainties, there are opportunities. This is a crucial moment for continued advocacy, data-driven policy formulation, and transparent communication with teachers themselves.

Looking Ahead:

While the definitive picture for 2024 remains incomplete, the current developments offer a ray of hope for Filipino teachers. Continued dedication from government agencies, legislators, and educators themselves can pave the way for a future where teachers are adequately compensated for their invaluable contributions to society.

Remember, this article is based on the latest information available as of January 2024. To stay updated on the status of teacher salary increases, it’s best to follow official announcements from the DepEd and other relevant government agencies.

I’m a retired teacher of 31 years. Teachers, like several other professions, are woefully underpaid. It breaks my heart because the lack of support and lower pay drives excellent teachers away from the profession.

This is so true, Pete. I am actually planning to change career paths. I love to teach but it always leads me to burnout and being underpaid here in our country worsens the case. But i love my job, but i hate the system 😅 thanks for sharing, Pete!
